New Morning Mercies

Devotional Book

Over the years, I have used many devotional books to guide my Bible reading and refresh my soul.  My current favorite devotional book is New Morning Mercies by Paul David Tripp.  I am a fan of the Tripp brothers (Paul and Tedd) and have profited from their insight and wisdom for parents.

This book was a Christmas gift from a special friend.  It offers short daily messages with personal stories or plausible, relatable examples, and suggests passages for further reading.  The messages are compelling and inspire additional reading of scripture.  Mr. Tripp understands the grace of God, and seeks to communicate our need for embracing this foundational truth.  Each message begins with a statement like: “Christ’s sacrifice satisfied the Father’s anger so that, as His child, you will receive His discipline but need not fear His wrath”, and “No need to be paralyzed by regret, because your slate has been wiped clean by God’s amazing forgiving grace”  (Tripp, 2014). The mercies of the Lord are indeed new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-24).

We get busy, and often lose sight of our purpose.  Taking even five to fifteen minutes to focus on truth and pray before you start your day is well worth the time.  Psalm 104 reminds us of the importance of seeking God.  “Oh give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name; make known His deeds among the peoples.   Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; speak of all His wonders.  Glory in His holy name; let the heart of those who seek the Lord be glad.  Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His face continually.  Remember His wonders which He has done, His marvels and the judgments uttered by His mouth…”

  1. One of my favorites is STREAMS IN THE DESERT by Lettie Cowman. It was a gift given to me and one that I’ve passed on to others. I believe it has been around for a long time, and it is such a beautiful treasure.

    1. Thanks for sharing one of your favorite devotional books. This is one that I read years ago and enjoyed too!
